Tom Scholz of 'Boston' returns to his Watertown home

Inside a stucco house on a busy street in Watertown, Massachusetts lies a typical basement: makeshift paneling, seasonal storage, and the mandatory underused exercise machine. There’s little here to suggest that this is also the site of one of the great origin stories in all of rock and roll history. Check out where the legendary band, Boston, got its start.

GREEDY Label PARALYZED Band for 8 Years…In 1986 WAGED HUGE Comeback With #1 Hit! | Professor of Rock

A lawsuit with a corrupt label stopped rock band Boston from releasing anything for 8 years. After ruling the late 70s with hits like More Than A Feeling and Peace of Mind and Don’t Look Back, Tom Sholz and Brad Delp were paralyzed for almost a decade and even though Tom Sholz wrote Amanda in 1980 he had to wait until 1986 to release it after the band won the verdict and were able to record with any label they chose. Their third album called Third Stage went to #1 as did the first single Amanda even though a rough demo bootleg had been played by some radio stations. Up next is the amazing story of the comeback of the 80s! Since 1955, songs with a one word title- featuring the first name of a female, has, unofficially, hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100... 15 times. To clarify, I am not talking about songs that have more than a single first name- such as “Judy In Disguise” by John Fred & His Playboy Band, or Michael Jackson’s monster hit “Billie Jean.” Just the singular given name of a female. It happened for the first time in 1957, when it happened three times , beginning with Pat Boone’s double-A side single “Love Letters in the Sand” and “Bernardine,” Followed by “Tammy” performed by actor Debbie Reynolds: Later in ‘57, 15 year old Paul Anka scored a chart topper with “Diana.” The last time a single word title with a female first name climbed all the way to #1, was in 1986, and, once again, it happened three times that year: The first in ’86 was “Sara” by Starship. The name “Venus” returned to #1 for the 3rd time, when Banarama recreated Shocking Blue’s original 1970 smash: The third time that a song with female first name went to #1 in ’86 on the Billboard Hot 100 was also the LAST TIME it happened. That distinction goes to “Amanda,” the comeback power ballad from the band, Boston, “Amanda” was written and produced, entirely, by Tom Scholz, the gangly, 6 foot 6 rock n’ roll savant that formed Boston, and the mastermind behind the band’s self-titled LP that became one of the biggest selling albums of all-time. Scholz began developing “Amanda” in 1980, while battling a very contentious lawsuit with Epic Records, the label that signed Boston. The war with Epic was just one of the obstacles that prevented Boston from releasing their third LP. There was also a wicked flood, that damaged the studio, and a massive power outage. Another impediment was Sholz notoriously, obsessive perfection. Tom’s painstaking precision not only frustrated the record label, but also exhausted his bandmates, who were forced to work on solo projects, and other outside work to make a living while Boston went on an extended hiatus in late ’79.

This CLASSIC 70s Record was REJECTED by EVERY Single Label...It SOLD 17 MILLION! | Professor of Rock

It was the blockbuster record that put rock back on the front burner in the middle of disco…and it came out of nowhere… Tom Scholz and his upstart band Boston saved rock and roll with it’s power chords thought 70s classics like More Than a Feeling, Peace of Mind, Foreplay/Long Time and Rock & Roll Band to name a few of the powerful song that ignited radio. It sent shockwaves through the industry when it sold out virtually everywhere. Yet it’d been rejected by every major label in the industry. one even wrote a rude letter saying it offered nothing new. Tom Scholz the genius behind it had been tinkering in his basement for nearly 6 years perfecting it’s sound… He was rejected, laughed at and on the verge of financial ruin… It helped that had had one of the greatest singers ever in Brad Delp...Up next an original band member who was there during that stint tells rock and roll’s Cinderella story of the record that saved rock and roll. Make sure to check us out on Patreon to become an insider with us. It’s time for another edition of our show breakthrough where we break down that singular sensation that helped kick open the door to an artists career and give the long term success. It was one of the greatest debut albums of all time by a monster rock band that by my account is the most under-appreciated bands of the rock and roll era who should’ve been in the rock and Roll hall of fame long ago. I know we talk about the big rock hall of fame snubs quite a bit on here… Well this might be the mother of all snubs. because they really helped save rock and roll when it was floundering in the mid 70s buried beneath an industry built on disco, mellow pop and singer songwriter fare. Not saying anytime bad about those genres just saying that rock was on the back burner. Well this band and their 17 million selling debut album blew up radio. You know who I’m talking about… Boston and their expansive debut album with rock standards like More Than A Feeling, peace of Mind, long time, Hitch a Ride and Smokin to name but a few… Released in August 1976, the debut Boston album sent was a rock and roll miracle. The band came out nowhere and shook the world off it’s axis injecting a primal energy into radio Tom Scholz the author of the Boston sound had been tinkering in his basement for nearly 6 years tweaking the record overdubbing and perfecting the sound he heard in his head. Many though he was going insane. That he had been in doors to long. but Scholz had a vision. and eye single to the sound he was trying to communicate to the world. His dream seemed to be slipping away as he was ridiculed, humiliated and dirt poor. Tom Scholz would later say “Everybody thought that it was impossible, because disco ruled the airwaves at the time,”But we stumbled onto a sound that worked, and soon everybody was imitating it.” The record of powerful riffs, multilayered vocals extravaganzas and harmonize guitar leads would over come the popularity of disco.

If You Dial it Down to 1 SONG…It’s Hard to ARGUE He’s Not the GREATEST EVER! | Professor of Rock

Forget the auto-tune. Today we’re going back to an era when singers could actually sing… unassisted. Just raw, pure, unadulterated talent. And in fact, we’re bringing you what I believe is the all-time greatest male vocal performance on a rock song. It’s tough to pick but I think Brad Delp of Boston on their 70s rock classic More Than A Feeling is the GOAT. Written by Tom Sholz the wizard who produced their Boston self-titled debut album in his basement is a perfect song. Upon release, it was an absolute instant classic. At his peak, Brad Delp was hitting and holding high notes that even the best of the best couldn’t reach, but despite that, he rarely gets the credit he deserves. So to put him back in the spotlight, I’m matching him against some insanely talented rock singers. Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Freddie Mercury of Queen, and Steve Perry of Journey…. And I’m stripping three iconic tracks down to the vocals for a head-to-head match-up… to prove once and for all who really deserves to be called the GOAT… the greatest one-song vocal performance. Get ready, it’s all coming up… NEXT on the Professor of Rock. If you remember when a TV theme song was a minute long instead of 5 seconds like today you’ll dig this channel of deep musical nostalgia. , subscribe below right now. I promise that you are going to love this channel. I was talking to some friends the other day and we were talking about the greatest one-song vocal performances ever. As they were throwing out some amazing performances All I could do was think of Brad Delp of Boston. How he moved heaven and earth when he was at his peak. Man, Boston, what can you say? So elite. And so far above and beyond your typical rock band. These guys were history in the making. And so was their debut self-titled LP… which is one of the finest AOR albums. One that would go on to sell a staggering 17 million copies. Today we’re giving you a different take on their biggest song. and let’s see if you agree. The line-up for this 70s epic was founded by multi-instrumentalist savant, songwriter, and sonic inventor Tom Scholz. Surrounding him was the formidable team of guitarist Barry Goudreau, bassist Fran Sheehan, drummer Sib Hashian, and at the mic, the legendary lead vocalist and guitarist Brad Delp. This Boston power rock album is a work of both art and science and an extraordinary achievement of imagination and innovation. A massive triumph, Boston’s debut helped save rock and roll and likewise ushered in a completely new era of rock excellence. And although there are only 8 tracks on this self-titled masterpiece, every one was good enough to be a hit single… That being said, the band’s label Epic chose just three, including the larger-than-life lead single: and one that may be the greatest one-song vocal of all time… More Than a Feeling. More Than a Feeling was composed by the great Tom Scholz about the indelible impact that an old favorite song can have in your life. And wow did the theme of that old favorite capture the world’s attention. The song's narrator is not happy with the present, waking up with the melancholy of a cloudy day… and longing for a girl from his past…

Simple Man _ The Roads

Escape Music is delighted to announce the release date for The Roads Featuring Gary Pihl (Boston/Sammy Hagar Band) and Mick Devine (Seven/solo artist) title of the album “Simple Man” Now is available, you can order your copy from: www.the-music-shop.net www.Escape-Music.com The Roads – Simple Man Release Date: 18th November 2022 Catalogue No: ESM371 The Roads are: Mick Devine - Vocals (Seven/solo artist) Gary Pihl - Guitars (Boston/Sammy Hagar) With special guests: Josh Devine - Drums (One Direction/Levara) Tracy Ferrie - Bass guitar (Stryper/Boston) Paul Taylor - Keyboards (Alice Cooper/Winger) Lawrence Gowan - Keyboards (Styx) Neil Miller - Keyboards Lin Devine - Background vocals Ben Devine - Additional vocals Scott Pihl - Additional guitar Produced by Gary Pihl and Mick Devine Mixed and Mastered by Dario Mollo Executive Producer Khalil Turk for Escape Music Ltd Artwork Design by Eric Phillippe Track list: 1 - Let’s not let it end like this 3:38 2 - Promise me 4:34 3 - Simple man 5:18 4 - How long? 3:47 5 - It will be alright 3:46 6 - No way 4:09 7 - Avalanche 3:35 8 - Love so strange 5:01 9 - Just not the same 3:44 10 - Love lives in promises 3:25 11 - Will you believe in me? 3:34 12 - Save you from your yesterdays 4:20 If the definition of a road is a pathway from somewhere - to somewhere, then The Roads is the perfect name for the collaboration of Mick Devine and Gary Pihl. Each musician has had a long journey from humble beginnings to incredible heights. Mick with the band Seven and his solo career and Gary as former Sammy Hagar Band and current guitarist with the band Boston have focussed their talents toward a new destination. Their intersection at this moment for their debut, Simple Man, promises to be the culmination of their experience and desire to go farther than they’ve ever been The seeds for this musical endeavour were first sown when Escape Music Khalil Turk sent the Turkish Delight song, ‘Get Out Of Here’, to Gary Pihl so that he could add guitars to it. “I was flattered that he wanted me to participate with the rest of those excellent musicians, but I had some ideas about how to change the groove of the song,” reveals Pihl. “That required changing the drum parts and Khalil gave me free reign to try it. He put me in touch with the drummer, Josh Devine. I’d always admired Josh’s terrific work with One Direction and Levara and as I told him my groove ideas, he knew exactly was I was talking about and of course, made the drum track even better than what I imagined.” In turn Pihl wanted to know the identity of the singer, which Josh Devine revealed was his Father, Mick Devine of Escape Music artists, Seven. Never one to miss an opportunity, Khalil Turk could see the chemistry developing and suggested they work together. “After about two minutes on the phone with Mick, I could tell he was a smart and talented guy with a great singing voice and eager to write some thoughtful lyrics and rocking songs,” says Pihl. “That’s what was most appealing to me.” The song writing throughout was an equal affair between Pihl and Devine. With Pihl adamant that he did not want it to sound like Boston, he certainly acknowledges that they have been inspired by every other band that’s come before them, but that they strived to be unique. “We never set to write with any direction in mind,” reveals Mick Devine. “The songs naturally formed as we worked making it by far the most collaborative writing partnership, I have been involved in. We very quickly realised that we had something special and the songs we were writing would really stand up and we are both so proud of this work.” But great songs require great musicians and joining both Pihl and Devine in this exciting new adventure are a myriad of experienced recording artists. According to Pihl, “using Mick’s son, Josh for drums, was the easiest choice.” Having worked with One Direction and Levara, his ideas set the stage for the rest of the musicians to lock into. With Pihl’s Boston partner of over ten years, Tracy Ferrie, joining on bass, the keyboard parts were deftly handled by session player Neil Miller and Winger’s Paul Taylor, an old band alumnus of Pihl’s from years ago. With Lawrence Gowan graciously agreeing to play keys on three songs, Pihl had always admired his work with Styx and of course his own band, Gowan. Even though he was so busy with Styx, through the magic of remote recording, he was able to send his fantastic ideas. “I told him I didn’t want listeners to say, “that sounds like Styx keyboards” I want listeners to say, “that sounds like Lawrence Gowan!”. With Pihl’s son, Scott, adding guitar and Mick’s wife, Lin and son Ben adding vocals, The Roads – a name created by Khalil Turk were ready to roll. www.Escape-Music.com

With Escape having been instrumental in quality releases from both Pihl’s outfit, Alliance, and Devine’s band, Seven, you can guarantee that this album is going to uphold that fine tradition. The album’s sound comes from a time when North American AOR behemoths ruled the airwaves and if you look closely, you’ll detect traces of Styx, Kansas, Foreigner and bands of that ilk in its DNA, but it’s armed with an identity all its own. From the lush, expressive vocals of Devine, through to Pihl’s subtle and understated guitar playing!

DECARLO - "Lightning Strikes Twice" (Official Music Video)

Subscribe here for more videos - http://radi.al/SubscribeFrontiers | From the album LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE. Get your copy NOW: https://radi.al/LightningStrikesTwi... The band DECARLO originated in Charlotte, North Carolina. Fronted by Tommy DeCarlo, best known for having performed with Boston since 2007, he co-founded the band with his son, guitarist Tommy DeCarlo Jr. As Tommy tells it, Tommy Jr. is truly the backbone of DECARLO. He has a great feel for what's going to work on stage, not just musically, but production wise, too and leads the charge in the band's performances. Of course no band is complete without a great supporting cast, which in DECARLO's case is provided by drummer Dan Hitz, bassist David Netta, and newest member Payton Velligan, who's a multi-talented keyboardist/guitarist/vocalist. The band's debut album ,“Lightning Strikes Twice" is a very fine slice of melodic rock, deeply rooted in the sound of masters of the genre like Boston, Foreigner, Survivor, and REO Speedwagon."Without question, musically Tom Scholz has been my biggest influence. He along with Brad Delp created pure magic in the studio,” tells Tommy DeCarlo. "Brad with his amazing voice and Tom of course being one of the best songwriter/producers I've ever heard, touched not only me, but millions with their recordings. I could name quite a few other bands that influenced me as well, but none as much as the music of the band Boston!" "We're very excited about the release of "Lightning Strikes Twice"!” continues Tommy. "As an artist/songwriter you're always going to be proud of your work, but there's nothing more gratifying than to please those who matter most...the fans! It's our hope that the music on this debut release will in some way/shape or form touch those who take the time to listen to it." Simply put… DECARLO ROCKS! If you are a classic AOR/Melodic Rock fand, you simply can’t miss this debut album. Tracklist: 1. A Better Day 2. You Are The Fire 3. Give Love A Try 4. Into The Storm 5. Lightning Strikes Twice 6. Still In Love 7. Rock N’ Soul 8. There She Goes 9. Stand Up (Play Ball) 10. The One 11. Gotta Go 12.
